Heritage Conservation Training Programme
The Heritage Skills Delivery Programme is a hands-on heritage conservation training programme delivered by York Conservation Trust, Pinnacle Conservation and York Learning.
Running from July 2026 to March 2027, this programme provides practical training, live conservation site experience, and employment support for individuals interested in developing specialist skills within the heritage and construction sectors.
Participants will gain experience in:
- Timber window repair - Lime mortar repointing - Fire door upgrading - Retrofit awareness -Working safely on construction and heritage sites.
All participants will achieve a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card, the industry-recognised health and safety requirement for working on construction sites.

This programme is suitable for you if you:
• Are interested in heritage buildings, traditional construction methods or conservation work
• Want to develop practical trade and maintenance skills
• Are considering a career in construction, heritage conservation or property maintenance
• Enjoy practical, hands-on learning
• Would like experience working on real historic buildings and live conservation projects
• Want to improve your employment prospects within the construction or heritage sectors
• Are willing to work both independently and as part of a team
• Are looking to gain industry-recognised certification and work experience
You do not need previous experience in heritage conservation to benefit from the programme. Training is designed to introduce learners to specialist heritage maintenance skills while building confidence and employability.

To be eligible for this project you must have the right to live and work in the UK, live in York or North Yorkshire, be over 18 years old, and *economically inactive.
*Economically inactive refers to people of working age who are neither employed nor currently actively seeking work,
e.g.
Students in full-time education.
Redundancy or risk of redundancy
Individuals looking after family or a home (caregivers or stay-at-home parents)
People dealing with long-term sickness or disability
Retired individuals or those taking early retirement

• Practical clothing suitable for workshop and site-based activities - see below
• Sturdy footwear suitable for construction and maintenance environments - although you will be measured for, and provided with, specialist clothing and footwear at the practical work stage of the programme
• A notebook and pen or smart phone (optional)
• Any existing CV or relevant employment documents, at the career planning support stage of the programme.
All specialist training materials, equipment and learning resources are provided as part of the programme. • There are no course fees for participating in the programme.
• The programme includes CSCS test preparation and support towards obtaining your CSCS card

Before joining the programme, please note: your place will need to be approved via a conversation with our team at York Learning, and you will be required to complete funding paperwork.
• Attendance is expected throughout all three programme modules - Practical activities take place in workshop and live site environments- Learners will be working on historic buildings and conservation projects within York - Health and safety guidance must be followed at all times - Training is delivered by experienced heritage conservation specialists - Participants will have access to employability support from the beginning of the programme through to completion - Individual careers guidance and mentoring are available to support progression into employment or further learning.
• This programme provides an introduction to heritage conservation skills and can act as a pathway into further specialist training opportunities.

York Learning receives government funding which allows us to offer courses at a lower cost. The guidelines relating to devolution means that we cannot apply this funding to learners who live in devolved areas such as the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Please note that Adult Education funding is for individuals who are over the age of 19 on the 31st of August prior to the start date of their course.
