Rag Rug Making for Wellbeing
This course blends the sustainable art of traditional rag rug making with wellbeing practices. Working in a slow and mindful way, rag rug making can help to reduce stress, encourage creative flow, and foster a sense of calm. The course will also provide the opportunity to breathe new life into discarded garments, by recycling these into your own unique handmade rug.

During the course, we will look at two different types of rag rug making: hooked rugs and prodded (clippie) rugs. Over the ten weeks, you will learn a range of techniques needed to design and craft a small rug, or - if you also take your rug home to work on - more than one rug. Your tutor will provide demonstrations and one to one guidance to assist you in developing your patterns and creating your final piece.

Alongside practical craft creation, each session incorporates basic wellness practices designed to restore a little balance to your daily life, including calming breathing techniques, grounding techniques, practical tips for getting enough good quality sleep, understanding the vital importance of spending time in nature and grabbing that ever illusive digital “detox” when possible!

You don’t need to bring anything with you to the first session. After this, you will need to provide your own materials for recycling into your rug. This could include: old clothing, jumpers, blankets and sweatshirts. Your tutor will provide guidance on this at the first class.

The library has a small car park which is shared with library users, including a couple of spaces for blue-badge holders. Alternatively, you can park at Morrisons supermarket, which is a couple of minutes' walk down the road. Bus numbers 1, 4 and 5 stop outside the library. There are also bike racks available.

When you enter the library into the café area, you will see your classroom immediately to your left.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product or tools that you intend to use during the course.
