Sew a Kimono - Build Confidence with delicate fabrics
This two day workshop is designed to help you master the art of working with lightweight, fluid fabrics while creating a beautiful, wearable kimono. If you’ve ever felt nervous about sewing fabrics like viscose, georgette or silky blends, this course gives you the space, guidance and techniques to handle them with confidence. You’ll learn how to prepare, stabilise and cut delicate materials accurately, explore different seam finishes, and understand how fabric behaviour influences drape and fit. With tutor support throughout, you’ll move step by step from layout to construction, building skills that make these “tricky” fabrics far less intimidating.
Across the two days, you’ll sew your own kimono-style garment, practising methods that elevate both accuracy and finish. You’ll experiment with tools and techniques suited to fine fabrics—such as appropriate needles, threads, pressing methods and edge finishes—so you can achieve a clean, elegant result. By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only take home a beautifully made kimono but also a renewed sense of confidence in handling delicate textiles, ready to apply your skills to future dressmaking projects.

You will need to bring fabric and haberdashery to complete the project. We will contact you approx. 3 weeks before the course with details of what you need to bring.

Sewing machines, overlockers, a cover stitch machine, a steam generated iron and lots of sewing equipment is available at the venue for learners to use. You are also welcome to bring along your own sewing machine, as long as it is in good working order, but please ensure you use one of our PAT extension cables (provided by the venue).

The dressmaking classrooms are on the first floor which can be accessed by lift or stairs.

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas, we encourage you to upload photos of your finished garment.
