Making Ceramics - Beginners and Improvers
Explore the art of clay in this enjoyable and creative 8-week handbuilding course suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. Learn and develop a range of techniques including slab building, coiling and modelling to create and glaze your own unique ceramic pieces.

Choose from a variety of projects such as pumpkins, bird feeders, wind chimes, bowls, plates and festive Christmas-themed creations, with the flexibility to develop your own ideas in discussion with the tutor. Templates and moulds will be available to support and inspire your designs.

This is a mixed ability course and is suitable for both ceramics beginners and those with some experience.

Clay and glazes are provided at an additional cost of £30.00 per student. This is payable in cash to the York Learning team at the first session.

Your tutor will guide you on the health and safety etiquette of the classroom and the appropriate use of all materials and equipment.

As this is a ceramics course, please come to class wearing clothes that you do not mind getting dirty or bring an apron. Please also avoid wearing sandals.

This course is structured to allow time for learning and making, with breaks for drying and firing, as follows:

Week 2: 21 September 2026 - Making
Week 3: 28 September 2026 - Making
Week 4: 5 October 2026 - Making
Week 5: 12 October 2026 - Making
Week 6: 19 October 2026 - Making

No classes 26 October 2026 (half-term holidays; work dries out) and 2 November 2026 (kiln firing)

Week 7: 9 November 2026 - Glazing
Week 8: 16 November 2026 - Glazing (last session)

Collection week: 7 December 2026

To find your classroom, please come to the main reception at the front of York High School. This is on your right at the beginning of the road leading into the car park. The green perimeter gates will be open, and the main reception is to your left once you have passed through the green gates.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product that you intend to use during the course.
