Supporting Children with Maths
Unlock the secrets of how Maths is taught in primary schools today — and build your confidence along the way!
This practical, jargon‑busting course takes you inside the methods teachers use in the classroom, helping you understand the “why” behind modern Maths strategies. You’ll explore hands‑on techniques, try out activities, and create a bank of simple resources you can use at home to support your child’s learning.

Across ten weeks, you’ll discover how children learn everything from place value to percentages, and how everyday tasks can become powerful opportunities for mathematical thinking. Best of all, there’s no pressure — just a friendly space to learn, practise, and ask questions.

What You’ll Explore Each Week:
Week 1: Place Value
Build your understanding of key place‑value vocabulary and learn fun, practical games you can use at home to strengthen children’s number sense.

Week 2: Addition
Explore concrete and visual strategies — including bar models, number lines and part‑whole models — to help children solve addition problems with confidence.

Week 3: Subtraction
Learn how children subtract mentally and practise using concrete, visual and written methods to support subtraction with larger numbers.

Week 4: Multiplication
Discover mental strategies for multiplication, learn how to spot multiples, and explore different methods for multiplying larger numbers.

Week 5: Division
Understand how children divide mentally and practise a range of approaches for dividing larger numbers using clear, accessible strategies.

Week 6: Sequences & Patterns
Look for patterns in numbers and shapes, explore symmetry, and discover common number sequences and geometric patterns.

Week 7: Fractions
Find fractions of shapes, objects and amounts, explore equivalents (including decimals and percentages), and understand how place value underpins decimal work.

Week 8: Percentages
Learn simple ways to calculate percentages, link them to fractions, and explore how to help children use calculators efficiently and accurately.

Week 9: Shape, Space & Measure
Recognise common 2D and 3D shapes, use tools like protractors and compasses, plot coordinates in four quadrants, and convert between standard units of measure.

Week 10: Fun with Maths!
Create games and activities to consolidate learning across all topics and explore how everyday tasks can spark mathematical conversations at home.

This course is perfect for:
