Introduction to Supporting Children in School
Are you interested in volunteering or working in a school, or thinking about a future career as a teaching assistant or teacher? This course is the ideal first step, giving you the knowledge and confidence to provide effective support for children’s learning in a school setting.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore key areas such as child development, communication, building positive relationships, safeguarding, and setting appropriate boundaries. You’ll learn how these skills come together to create a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment for children.

The course is taught by specialist teachers with extensive experience in York’s schools, ensuring you gain practical insight, real‑world understanding and a strong foundation for further training or school‑based roles.

Our courses are designed for parents, carers and anyone who wants to support children’s learning or take their first steps towards volunteering or working in schools. Whether you want to feel more confident helping with learning at home, understand how children develop, or explore a future as a teaching assistant or even a career in teaching, we’re here to help you grow.

We work closely with local schools to build practical skills, confidence and real‑world understanding. Our free workshops are friendly, hands‑on and supportive, giving learners the tools they need to help children thrive—both at home and in the classroom. There’s always space to ask questions, share experiences and learn in a welcoming environment.

Learners can also work towards Functional Skills qualifications in Maths or English and access personalised guidance on future training, volunteering roles and pathways into school‑based careers, including teaching assistant positions and routes into teaching.
