How Children Learn English
Discover how English is taught at primary school today - from storytelling to spelling cards and from reading schemes to writing projects. We will unravel all the technical jargon and explore how and what children learn at different stages.

We will look at how your child can learn from different experiences, share engaging ideas, and try out resources to assist your child's reading, writing and communication skills at home.

Stuck with homework? Bring it along to the class and we'll help you understand what the teacher is asking your child to do. If you're not confident about talking to your child's teacher about progress, we will discuss this, too. This course is perfect for parents, grandparents, or carers of children at primary school who wish to find out how English is taught, how they can help with homework, and how they can support their child's learning at home.

It is also useful if you wish to volunteer or work in a school or pre-school setting, particularly if you aim to get qualifications to be a teaching assistant or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA).

Family Learning is for anyone who wants to understand children’s development and support their learning—parents, grandparents, carers, and any adult with an interest in helping children thrive. We work closely with schools across the city, building confidence at home and celebrating the progress children make.

Our free courses and workshops give adults practical skills, fresh ideas and the confidence to support children through their Early Years and Primary School. Sessions are friendly, creative and hands‑on, with plenty of space to ask questions and share challenges.

Learners can also work towards Functional Skills qualifications in Maths or English and access personalised guidance on future learning, new career pathways and routes into employment.
