Sashiko & Boro Workshop - Japanese Embroidered Bag Making
This workshop will introduce you to the Japanese Stitch Traditions of Sashiko and Boro. You will make a unique small lined bag using both techniques.

Originally this type of textile work was done in rural communities as a type of make do and mend activity. Well-worn work clothes, usually made of dark blue linen were patched and stitched with white thread. Running stitches were used to create beautiful geometric patterns.

You will be able to choose from a wide range of stencils so that you can stitch a traditional pattern and create a bespoke Sashiko/Boro-inspired bag.

This workshop is suitable for beginners but it would be an advantage to have some experience of hand stitching. The bag will be constructed using a sewing machine. Help and guidance will be given throughout.

All materials and equipment will be provided, but if you are left handed and have your own scissors, please bring them.

There will be £1.00 charge on the day for the Sashiko thread. Please give this in cash to your tutor at the start of the workshop.

If you are claiming a Means Tested Benefit fee reduction or enrolling via social prescription, the material costs for this workshop will be covered by York Learning.

Please bring with you a packed lunch and refreshments. Tea and coffee provided by York Learning will also be available to purchase.
