Landscape Oil Painting
In this workshop we will focus on using oil paints to create a series of landscape studies. We will explore the colours, textures, and unique qualities of oils, building on the basics while also trying more advanced techniques and ideas. Throughout the day, you will be encouraged to experiment with different approaches, with an emphasis on growing your confidence and ambition. We will work from a selection of source images in a variety of styles and genres.

You will be introduced to additional techniques such as acrylic underpainting and we will look more deeply at adapting the consistency of oil paint, working with a palette knife and trying more experimental methods. Mark-making will play a key role, helping you develop a more considered and expressive approach in your work.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a collection of experimental landscape studies to take home and continue developing.

Please bring £5.00 cash to cover the cost of workshop-specific materials. This is paid directly to your tutor on the day. This covers the cost of oil paint, solvent, and oil painting paper. There will also be a selection of palette knives and brushes to borrow if you don’t have your own.

Please bring 2 x glass jam jars, a painting rag/cloth and wear painting clothes or an apron as it can get messy.

If you have your own oil paints, then you’re welcome to bring them along - with any other painting kit you may want to use.

Please note that your oil paintings will still be wet when you take them home, so you might want to bring a cardboard box or a plastic bag to carry them in.

If you have any queries about materials, please email your tutor directly at studio@lizfosterart.co.uk

If you are claiming a Means Tested Benefit fee reduction or enrolling via social prescription, the material costs for this workshop will be covered by York Learning.

We will have an extended break at midday for lunch. Please bring your own packed lunch, refreshments and drinks. The venue has a small café area where the tutor can serve tea and coffee for £1.50 a mug.
