Furniture Design and Restoration
Develop the skills required to make furniture from new timber or recycled timber, or learn how to renovate a piece of furniture.

The course is designed around you. The tutor will assess the needs of each student and plan accordingly, covering topics such as making frameworks, strengthening, and choosing and applying finishes, stains and polishes. We will also look at stripping, cleaning, repairing and making missing parts, to return furniture to its former glory.

Please note: this is not an upholstery course, but the tutor is happy for people to bring upholstery items if they are able to work on their own initiative to some extent. Resources (books) on upholstery are available for you to look at but the tutor is not an upholsterer.

Please bring a project to work on such as an old piece of furniture or materials to make a new piece from scratch. This can be discussed at the first class if you wish. You may also require paint/varnish stripper, wire wool, meths, rubber gloves, an apron, French/button polish, timber, cotton wool and lint-free cloths. Most of these items will be for restoring.

Please note: this is not an upholstery course, but the tutor is happy for people to bring upholstery items if they are able to work on their own initiative to some extent. Resources on upholstery are available but the tutor is not an upholsterer.

If you are uncertain about what project to do or what materials you need for your own project, please contact York Learning and we will put you in touch with the tutor who can give you some advice about what to bring as a basic kit for the first class, and for your ongoing project.

The school holds a small amount of items to get people started at the first session if you are unsure about what you need e.g. stripper, wire wool and abrasives (there is no timber available though).

Please be aware, this is a course where you will be required to provide most of your own materials. You also need to be able to carry everything from the car park through the school.

If you are claiming a Means Tested Benefit fee reduction or enrolling via social prescription, there is financial help available to help pay for the cost of your materials: click here for more information.

No class on 17 February 2026 (half-term holidays).

To find your classroom, come to the main reception at the front of York High School. This is on your right at the beginning of the road leading into the car park. The green perimeter gates will be open, and the main reception is to your left once you have passed through the green gates.

The classroom is located some distance from the car park and entrance, so please do not bring items that are too heavy to carry (a trolley is available to borrow on request).

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product or tools that you intend to use during the course, before the first class.
