Jewellery - Silver Making Techniques
During this 6-week course you will develop an understanding of the basic science behind manipulating metals and the processes used to clean and polish copper and silver.

You will learn the basics of silver jewellery making, including how to anneal (soften), cut (pierce), file, form and solder this precious metal. Your tutor will talk through the tools used within the course and demonstrate all the steps and techniques necessary to make lovely items of jewellery in either copper and/or silver.

Copper will be provided each week. The copper, Silver Bezel wire and 8/10mm stones for the stone setting element of the course are included within the material costs.
Sterling silver, silver chain and larger stones are not, but can be purchased from the tutor, if you wish to work in silver. You may also wish to bring your own stones or sea glass for bezel setting a stone, in weeks 3 to 5.

By the end of the course, you will have designed and made a ring band in copper and a stone set pendant, in either copper or silver, depending upon learner preference. The following provides an overview of what we will cover in the course:

Week 1 – Learning the foundations: an introduction to filing, annealing and 2 types of soldering (copper)
Week 2 – Making a ring band (copper 6mm x 1mm)
Week 3 – Bezel setting: learn to bezel set a stone (silver and copper)
Week 4 – Designing your pendant: create a back plate and attach your bezel
Week 5 – Designing and completing your pendant: add a bale and finish your piece (silver available to purchase if desired)
Week 6 – Finishing your pendant/course reflection/advice on how to set up at home.

By the end of the course, you will have a good understanding of the processes for making silver jewellery. You will also be given information on how to set up a jewellery making space within your home and a basic tools list for those who wish to continue jewellery making at home and within a budget.
