Pattern Cutting - Fitted Jacket (Pattern & Toile Fit)
Unleash your inner tailor with our course on jacket pattern drafting!

This two-day comprehensive class will equip you with the fundamental skills to create an impeccably fitting jacket pattern from scratch, drafted and customized to your unique measurements through a drafting code with tutor support all the way. Measuring and some simple maths calculations will be required.

You'll delve into the intricacies of various jacket styles, learn how to draft essential components like collars, lapels, and two-piece sleeves, and master the art of pattern manipulation for different design elements.

Once the pattern is complete, it is recommended that you make a toile (mock-up) of the jacket to check fit with tutor support on hand.

*You will not be making a finished jacket in the workshop, moreover you will draft the pattern and make a toile and will be guided through individual fitting and customising.

This is not a beginner’s workshop, experience of sewing simple garments using a pattern is essential.

The course is delivered by a tutor who is also a practitioner in the subject and is on hand to teach by a variety of methods including tutor presentation, varied demonstrations and one-to-one personalised guidance.

A notebook, sharp pencil (ideally a propelling pencil), rubber and ruler, you may also wish to bring a calculator and basic sewing kit (including fabric and paper scissors, thread, pins, tape measure).

Please also bring an old double duvet cover or 1.5m of calico or similar cotton fabric to make a toile once the draft/pattern is completed.

Dot and Cross paper will be available for the initial drafting, but you will need to provide your own tracing paper to create the pattern – Burda Dressmaking tissue paper is ideal.

Sewing machines, overlockers, a cover stitch machine, a steam generated iron and lots of sewing equipment is available at the venue for learners to use. You are also welcome to bring along your own sewing machine, as long as it is in good working order, but please ensure you use one of our PAT extension cables (provided by the venue).

Please note, refreshments are not provided as part of the day. There is a café on site that sells refreshments and food, but we recommend that you bring your own packed lunch.

The dressmaking classrooms are on the first floor which can be accessed by lift or stairs.

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas, we encourage you to upload photos of your finished garment.

As an added feature, we hold a charity Dressmaking Showcase, at the end of the summer term, to celebrate the wonderful work that has been produced during the year, to which all learners are invited.
