Photography: Creative Lighting Techniques for Beginners
Learn the basics of lighting in photography with professional photographer Carys. This one-day course is great for people who want to try something creative, ask any questions and understand how to use a variety of light sources easily available to all. This course will cover natural light sources and artificial light sources.

You will leave feeling confident in regards to how to handle bright sun and dull days, and also inspired to try out your own creative lighting at home. You’ll practise photographing each other, still life - and anything of interest to you! Across the day there will be a combination of practice and theory, with a lighthearted and fun approach to learning.

This course is suitable for all people who have an interest in testing some new things out with their cameras, trial and erroring fun approaches to lighting in a friendly group. You will be encouraged to follow guidance but also to develop your own creative ideas amongst your peers. This day will provide skills for creative thinking, resourcefulness and confidence in learning something new - skills with photography but also skills that you can transfer to other areas of your life.

You will need to provide your own camera phone or camera, batteries and memory cards. Lights, accessories and fun props will be provided - and you are more than welcome to bring in whatever everyday item you think is visually interesting (and transportable) - such as fabrics, foliage/flowers, props, etc. You could also bring any lighting sources (even if they’re not typically "photography lights") to the class to incorporate into your photos if you like!

If you would like anything to eat or drink during the workshop, the library café has a lovely selection of hot and cold drinks, food and snacks. Or please feel free to bring your own refreshments, but ensure that the classroom is left clean at the end of the session (no spills or crumbs left on tables or floors, and all empty cups binned please). Thank you.

This course takes place in the Garden Room at the central library in York. It is a ground floor classroom.

Please note that the library has no parking available. There are sometimes a couple of available parking slots for people with a blue badge directly outside the library but these are City of York Council owned, and not library owned, and cannot be relied on to be available. There are bike racks and a number of buses that stop nearby.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product that you intend to use during the course.
