Getting to Know Your Camera
This workshop is designed for total beginners to gain an understanding of camera settings and how they work.

Perhaps you have a digital camera at home and would love to know how to use it beyond the automatic settings. In this one-day course, we will cover simple tips and tricks for getting your head around exposure and the relevant settings.

We will look at shutter speed, aperture and ISO. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions and learn what information to prioritise, and the tutor will be sure to make this is easy to understand, breaking down all the complicated photographic jargon.

You will finish the day with a solid understanding of the basics and the confidence to go home and try out your newly-understood camera settings.

This course is suitable for all people who have an interest in testing some new things out with their cameras, with a "trial and error-esque" approach to learning.

Carys will cover interesting topics and help in breaking down all the technical information. You can be at any level, all are welcome, but please be aware this is for beginners and can really help to boost understanding of those seemingly confusing settings! You’ll be a whizz in no time!

Please bring with you your camera, a charged battery or two, a memory card or two, paper and a pen. You can also bring examples of your previous photography if you'd like to use them as examples of what you like/what you would like to learn more about for personalised advice.

If you would like anything to eat or drink during the workshop, the library café has a lovely selection of hot and cold drinks, food and snacks. Or please feel free to bring your own refreshments, but ensure that the classroom is left clean at the end of the session (no spills or crumbs left on tables or floors, and all empty cups binned please). Thank you.

This course takes place in the Garden Room at the central library in York. It is a ground floor classroom.

Please note that the library has no parking available. There are sometimes a couple of available parking slots for people with a blue badge directly outside the library but these are City of York Council owned, and not library owned, and cannot be relied on to be available. There are bike racks and a number of buses that stop nearby.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product that you intend to use during the course.
