Makaton - Level 1
Makaton is a language programme that uses a combination of speech, signs and symbols to help people communicate, particularly those with communication difficulties. It is a "keyword signing" system where signs are used alongside speech and in the same order as spoken English, offering visual cues and alternative communication options.

Over 4 sessions, you will be introduced to the Makaton communication language programme. We will cover the importance of communication and why we need an inclusive community for all, including a brief history of how Makaton was developed.

You will learn over 100 Makaton signs and symbols from stage 1 and stage 2 of the core vocabulary, along with some additional vocabulary Makaton signs and symbols. You will also learn how to use Makaton in sentences at the appropriate level of need.

By the end of week 4, you will feel confident in using Makaton to sign a practice sentence. You will also be able to translate the practice Makaton symbols sentences into simple sentences.

You will build a plan for how to start using the Makaton communication language programme in your day-to-day lives to make a more inclusive community.

Each learner will be provided with a Makaton Level 1 manual and a Makaton Level 1 certificate on completion. Please note that you need to attend all 4 sessions to receive the Makaton Level 1 certificate.
