Introduction to Oil Painting - Absolute Beginners
Oil Painting for Absolute Beginners is the perfect introduction for anyone who has always wanted to try oil painting but didn’t know where to start.

This friendly, supportive workshop is designed for complete beginners and taught by professional artist Liz Foster. We’ll cover the basics step by step, including what equipment you need, setting out your materials, your palette of colours, and understanding how oil paint behaves.

During the workshop you’ll learn fundamental techniques such as colour mixing, brushwork, layering and blending. You'll also be introduced to concepts like composition and tone. Through a series of simple guided exercises, you’ll begin to build your confidence and understanding.

By the end of the day, you will have a solid foundation in oil painting and what to do next if you’d like to keep working in oils.

Your materials are provided (see additional costs below), and the class is taught by a professional artist in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

You can book a place on the Oil Painting: Develop your Skills workshop, which runs the day after this if you would like to complete a two-day course. The course code is AT1/QH5.

Please bring £5.00 to cover the cost of workshop-specific materials. This includes: solvent, oil paint, palette and painting paper. This is payable to your tutor on the day. It would help if you could bring the correct amount of money to reduce cash handling. Thank you.

There will also be a selection of brushes and palette knives for you to borrow.

You will need to bring the following:

- 2 x glass jam-jars for solvent
- An apron/painting clothes
- An old rag for cleaning brushes
- Your work will still be wet when you take it home, so please bring a board to attach it to, or box/bag etc. so that you can carry work safely.

If you have any queries about materials please email your tutor directly at studio@lizfosterart.co.uk

Please bring your own packed lunch, drinks and snacks. The venue has a small café area where the tutor can serve tea and coffee for £1.50 a mug.
