Introduction to Weaving & Tapestry Techniques
This course is an introduction to tapestry and off-loom weaving techniques.

You will create a summer-themed tapestry, which could be a small wall hanging, a panel for a tote bag, or a cushion cover, depending on your preferences.

Over the course, students will learn various tapestry weaving techniques through step-by-step demonstrations. Your tutor will guide you in designing and creating a weaving inspired by summer colours and themes.

The informal structured sessions are aimed to provide a therapeutic yet inspiring environment where participants can experience a sense of calm through creative expression.

You will be encouraged to work at your own pace while benefiting from the support of a creative group.

At the start, Helen will introduce the fundamentals of tapestry weaving, including an overview of the techniques she will cover. Students will learn how to set up a frame, explore different weaving methods, and experiment with design ideas. Helen will offer personalized guidance, helping each student choose an appropriate project based on their skill level and interests.

By the end of the course, students will have completed a tapestry project, depending on their chosen complexity and the amount of time they dedicate outside of class. You will also gain a solid understanding of weaving techniques, how to set up a frame, and how to finish and display your work.

What you’ll learn:

• How to set up a tapestry frame

• Different tapestry weaving techniques, including plain weave, free weaving, kilim, rug knots (Turkish and Persian) and colour blending

• How to design your own tapestry project

• How to finish your weaving

• Display and presentation options
