Pilates for all
The venue for this class is Acomb Methodist Church Hall, but you can also join the class online via Zoom (please see below for further details).

This Pilates course is suitable for beginners and also for individuals who have already learnt the principles of Pilates to further improve posture, balance and alignment of the body. The six principles of Pilates are concentration, control, centre, flow, precision, and breathing. Students are taught to use their “powerhouse". The powerhouse is the centre of the body and when strengthened, it offers a solid foundation for any movement.

This Pilates class will focus on core strength and train the body as an integrated whole. Participants will improve strength and balanced muscle development through Pilates exercise as well as improving flexibility and increased range of motion for their joints. The course will develop your Pilates skills and help you to maintain and build your form, ability and strength and exercises will progress as the course continues dependent upon individual ability.

Engage in a variety of exercises to suit your level and ability which will help to improve your posture, flexibility and core stability.

If attending in person please bring a Pilates mat at least 12mm thick (which can be purchased for approx £10 - £15), and a cushion or block (optional - approx £4-5). Please wear loose clothing suitable for exercise, and bring a towel and a water bottle. All long hair must be tied back and loose jewellery removed. No footwear is required.

Ideally you will need a 10-12mm mat thickness to help support bones and joints through movement which allows exercises to be performed more comfortably and dynamically.

If attending on Zoom please make sure you have a suitable space available to exercise in, where you will be able to see your screen easily and safely.

This is a Hybrid course. This means you have a choice in how you participate - either in person at Acomb Methodist Church Hall or online via Zoom. You don’t have to decide now - in fact you can decide on a week by week basis depending on your personal circumstances, e.g. weather, transport etc.

Please join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.

Before starting any exercise programme, it’s advisable to seek advice from your GP or a health professional if you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury. As we are not qualified healthcare professionals, by participating in one of our online courses you agree to take full responsibility for your own health, wellbeing and safety.

If you have any health problems or difficulties that you suffer from which you feel may impact on your ability to participate in this class please email york.learning@york.gov.uk with the class you will be attending (title/code/tutor) and we will forward this onto the relevant tutor who will, if they feel it appropriate, contact you before your first class to discuss this with you.

Please note there is no class on 29 October 2024 in half-term holidays.
