Italian Beginners
This is a face-to-face course providing an introduction to the Italian language for beginners. The course covers both language and learning techniques, but emphasis is on the spoken word. You will also learn about some aspects of Italian life, food and coffee culture.

Starting from simple introductions and saying your name, you’ll progress week by week towards being able to hold longer conversations and understand more of the Italian language in different situations.

The course covers pronunciation and basic grammar rules, with lots of role play and interactions based on real life situations. Each week there will be new vocabulary and some reading and writing tasks to reinforce what you have learned.

At the end of 10 weeks, you will be able to:

• Greet people both formally and informally

• Ask people how they are and respond

• Give information about your family and where you come from

• Use the alphabet and numbers to spell your name and mobile number

• Describe people’s appearance

• Discuss shopping, prices and sizes

• Read a menu and order food and drink from a café or restaurant

• Ask questions and directions and understand replies

• Exchange pleasantries and learn how to be polite in Italy

It doesn’t matter whether you have no experience of the language, or you’ve picked up some phrases from travelling across Italy. This course is suitable for you if you would like to speak and understand a little when on holiday or travelling for work, or speak Italian with friends and family.

If you are unsure which level of course you should join, please email us at york.learning@york.gov.uk and we will pass on your query to the appropriate tutor.

Please bring a pen and an A4 ring binder file (or similar) for storing handouts and exercise sheets that your tutor will provide throughout the course. Alternatively, you may prefer to bring a tablet or laptop to work with in class. All materials can be provided in electronic (PDF) format and options will be discussed during the first session.

The course book used will be BBC Talk Italian 1. This can be purchased online. Waterstones in York sometimes has copies. Some students may prefer to buy the box set (BBC Talk Italian 1 and 2 along with the Grammar book).

Note: Please do not purchase the book or online resources until we give confirmation that the course is going ahead.
