Creative Photography
Learn all you need to know about creative photography with professional photographer Carys.

This course is great for people who want to try something creative, pick up a new hobby or just have fun with the support of the group.

The course will teach basic photography skills with a creative approach. You’ll practise photographing each other, still life - and anything else of interest to you!

Each week you will develop a new aspect of your skillset and have fun with very simple but effective DIY photo projects.

Across the course, you will have a combination of mini-workshops, practical photography, and reviews of your work.

We hope that you will leave the course having gained the confidence to think outside the box when it comes to creating truly interesting photographs, we also hope that you will have had fun!

Please note: this course is comprised of 4 taught sessions delivered over 3 weeks. One of the sessions will be a night shoot and this will take place on Thursday 17th October (in the event of adverse weather, the night shoot will be held the week after on 24th October).

For the night shoot, we will meet in the Garden Room at Explore York Library and discuss the challenges associated with low light photography, before going out to create exciting images of our own. (The other 3 sessions will take place at Huntington School on Tuesday 8th October, 15th October and 22nd October.)

This course is suitable for people who have an interest in testing some new things out with their cameras, and who are happy with a trial and error approach to photography.

You will be encouraged to follow guidance but also to develop your own creative portraiture and still life ideas amongst your peers.

As well as giving you the opportunity to connect with others, the course will provide skills for creative thinking, and help you to develop your resourcefulness and confidence in learning something new, which could lead to you transferring those skills to other areas of your life.

The course will provide skills for self-improvement in photography which could lead to further study or a pathway towards self-employment as a working artist.

You will need to provide your own camera, batteries, memory cards - and bring them to each class.

Materials will be provided for things like backdrops, accessories, fun props - but as the course progresses you will be more than welcome to bring in anything you may like and will be invited to bring whatever everyday item you think is visually interesting (and transportable) to class to incorporate into your photos, such as fabrics, foliage/flowers, props, etc.
