Initial Assessment for ESOL Courses
Applications for the 24-25 academic year are now closed. Appplications for the 25-26 academic year will open in May 2025.

English for Speakers of Other Languages courses are for individuals who speak English as an additional language and want to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. Classes are normally four hours a week for 33 weeks (Sep-July).

We have courses available at six levels with options to pay in instalments.
Pre-Entry - fees up to a maximum of £400
Entry Level 1- fees up to a maximum of £400
Entry Level 2 - fees up to a maximum of £1,440
Entry Level 3 - fees up to a maximum of £1,440
Level 1 - fees up to a maximum of £1,440
Level 2 - fees up to a maximum of £1,440

To get started, please submit an application. We will contact you at a future date to invite you to an initial assessment where a tutor will assess your level and tell you which course is most suitable. The Initial Assessment is a 1-1 meeting with a tutor in West Offices.

To be eligible for an ESOL course with York Learning you need to be:
- Aged 19 by 31 August 2024
- Resident in the UK/EEA for at least the last 3 years

You may be eligible for full funding if you are:
- Unemployed and in receipt of JSA or Universal Credit
- Earning less than £25,000 per year

Your ESOL course will also allow you to improve your transferable skills and support you in finding a job, or building on the skills you already have. Through the activities on your course you'll develop skills including communication, resilience, organisation and time management, problem solving, adaptability, teamwork and leadership.

York Learning receives government funding which allows us to offer courses at a lower cost. The guidelines relating to devolution means that we cannot apply this funding to learners who live in devolved areas such as the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Please note that Adult Education funding is for individuals who are over the age of 19 on the 31st of August prior to the start date of their course.

This means that there will be an additional cost for learners who are under 19 who wish to access funded courses.

For safeguarding reasons, we cannot accept learners who are under 18 on courses except by prior arrangement. This does not apply to programmes which are designed for 16-18s.
