Italian for Beginners
This is an online course providing an introduction to the Italian language. It is aimed at those who have no, or very little, previous knowledge.

In Term 1, we will cover useful vocabulary and phrases for practical situations: greetings and introductions, numbers, nationalities, talking about your family, ordering drinks and snacks, and asking directions (as well as understanding the answers in Italian!). There will be a focus on speaking and listening, with plenty of opportunity in the online class to practise with other students and with your tutor. There will also be some reading and writing tasks to help you learn new vocabulary and basic grammar rules.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Greet people appropriately and introduce yourself and others.
• Talk a little about yourself and ask others about themselves.
• Talk about your family.
• Use numbers up to 100.
• Order drinks and snacks from a menu and understand prices.
• Ask for simple directions around town and understand the answers.

This course will be taught online via Zoom, so please ensure that you read the section "Is there anything else I need to know?".

This is an online course that is delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using.

You will receive information and joining instructions on how to access the course by email about 24 hours before the course is due to start. If you enrol later than this, the Zoom code will be emailed to you on the day that your course starts. The Zoom code login and password you receive will be the same for every class this term.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.

This course provides skills for self-improvement, which could lead to further study in the subject and, in the long term, to work as a translator/interpreter.
