Introduction to Pattern Cutting (Make a Stretch Top )
Do you find that when you use a commercial pattern, you are often between sizes or the neckline isn’t quite right, the sleeves are too long, etc?

This introduction to pattern cutting workshop gives you the opportunity to draft your own pattern, using your own measurements so that you can achieve the perfect fit. You will work through a drafting code with tutor support all the way. Measuring and some simple maths calculations will be required.

Once the pattern is complete, it is recommended that you make a toile (mock up) of the top to check the fit.
You will be given advice on how to choose the right fabric and tips for accurate cutting.

An overlocker and coverstitch machine will be available on the day. You will use these machines to their full potential and learn how to navigate curves and angles, finish the neckline and attach the sleeves to create a ‘shop bought’ finish.

Rather than use an overlocker and coverstitch machine, you may wish to use either your own, or one of our sewing machines, so that you understand how to sew jersey fabric at home: which stitches and thread to use, advice on tension, etc.

Teaching and learning will be based on a variety of methods and these will include tutor presentation, varied demonstration and one to one personalized guidance.

Please bring a notebook, sharp pencil and ruler, you may also wish to bring a calculator.

Please also bring 1.5m of stretch fabric (a cotton or viscose jersey is recommended) to make a toile once the draft/pattern is completed. Anyone above a Size 20 would need 2m of fabric. Further details will be sent out a few weeks prior to the course.

We advise that you bring your own sewing machine or overlocker (if you have one), so that you gain experience using it. Please let us know in advance if you plan to bring your own machine - and please note that the room we use at the venue is on the second floor.

A steam generated iron, overlockers and a cover stitch machine will all be available to use during the sessions.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.
