Introduction to GCSE Biology
Please register your interest to join the GCSE Biology course starting September 2024 via the 'Apply' option.

is the scientific study of living organisms. The word ‘biology’ literally means the study of life. Biology covers living things, whether human, plant or animal.
Biology is at the forefront of many of the most important and exciting current issues, whether it is the effect of global warming and other environmental issues; our continuing fight against disease and pathogens; how our body works and what makes us all different.
Studying Biology at GCSE will not only introduce you to many of the fundamental biological concepts that underpin the science, but also equip you with the knowledge and ability to understand many scientific advances in the news.

There are 7 topic areas that are studied in the GCSE Biology syllabus:
1. Cell biology
2. Organisation
3. Infection and response
4. Bioenergetics
5. Homeostasis and response
6. Inheritance, variation and evolution
7. Ecology

As you’d expect from such a varied field, you’ll learn some incredibly interesting things. From how our bodies work, photosynthesis, development of new drugs/vaccines, DNA structure, microscopic cells to genetics and evolution, biology covers many intriguing topics.

As part of the course there will be the opportunity, where possible, for practical "hands-on" work where you will learn important practical skills. You’ll also learn many transferable skills like researching, problem-solving and critical thinking.
Qualifications in biology can open many exciting career paths. Many employers and further education establishments encourage having a science GCSE qualification such as biology along with English and maths.
