Draw and Explore (inc. Plein Air)
Over the course of ten weeks we shall explore working en plein air, outside of York Minster, looking at architecture, surrounding grounds, fauna and artefacts. We will also work inside, sometimes situating ourselves within the Minster itself, and on other occasions within a designated studio space, where we will work from still life, or perhaps take the opportunity to develop sketches made elsewhere from within the grounds.

We will critique work during each session and you will receive regular feedback and support between sessions, online, through our class Padlet board (an online image sharing and feedback page).

All levels of confidence are welcome; we will all learn something from each other. This class will help guide you to find your own instruction.

Because this is a multi-location class, you will need to find ways of working comfortably whilst in situ. Most areas of the Minster and its grounds are level and accessible, some involve a few steps - but you won't be left behind!

This course provides skills for self-improvement, which could lead to further study/or self-employment as a working artist.

You will need to bring your own materials. At the first session please bring a sketch book, pencil, sharpener and eraser. Some days, a lightweight easel and board would be ideal too, certainly for working outside.

We will discuss requirements each week, and your tutor will bring equipment to show you how to work lightly. It can be cool inside the minster, so do bring an extra layer or two, just in case it is chilly. If the weather is poor, we will be inside.

This course takes place in York Minster and its grounds. There is an accessible studio for days when we want to create some longer pieces from our preliminary studies. Please note that the Minster has no parking available. There are bike racks and a number of buses that stop nearby. Meet outside the Minster at the main entrance (West Side) for our first session.

No session on Tuesday 31 October 2023 (half-term holidays).
