Dressmaking & Sewing Skills
The aim of this course is for learners to build confidence and knowledge whilst learning a range of sewing skills.

If learners are at the start of their sewing journey, they can build a portfolio of samples and learn new techniques, before embarking upon the production of a simple garment or item of soft furnishing.

If learners already have some knowledge and basic sewing skills, they will continue with a project that they started during the previous term (returning learners), or liaise with the tutor to begin making a garment/project of their own choice.

All learners will:

- Create samples and learn techniques to assist with garment construction.
- Learn how to take measurements and chose the right patterns for your shape.
- Understand and read patterns.
- Learn how to mark out and cut garments.
- Learn how to select the correct fabric to make a garment or project.
- Gain knowledge and skills to undertake basic alterations and repairs.
- Construct simple garment(s)/soft furnishings/tote bag.

- a notepad, file for samples, ruler, pens and cotton sheet (medium weight), with which to make samples.
- a 'basic/easy range' skirt, trouser or PJ pattern that you would like to construct during this term. Please wait until after the first session before purchasing your fabric for this garment as it may be beneficial to chat through the options with your tutor first.

Existing learners:
- for the first session, please bring any unfinished items or new project ideas.

Materials and equipment needed for the rest of the course will be discussed on the first night. Materials for samples and projects are not provided by the course tutor. Advice and guidance wil be given throughout the course regarding which materials to buy and where to buy these from.

Learners may bring their own sewing machine if preferred. However, this must be in good working order and be used with a PAT tested extension lead (provided by the venue).
