Keep Moving! (Seated All-Inclusive – Dementia Friendly)
Join us for this new all-inclusive friendly exercise class aimed at helping improve your health and well-being in a friendly, social and relaxing environment. We aim to make this class as accessible as possible. It is noted that those with existing health conditions may also need the support of a carer in order to take part. Therefore, carers or a family member are welcome.
Over-time, the exercise session will be tailored to meet the needs of the class. However, as a general guide we will start seated and follow a gentle and flowing series of exercises aimed at mobilising the joints and warming the body prior to improving strength, flexibility, co-ordination and relaxation. There will be an opportunity for those wanting to perform standing exercises in order to improve leg strength and balance.
During class background music will be played and from time-to-time music will change to incorporate different genres to add interest and enjoyment to the class experience.
Our Instructor, Linda, will aim to make all participants feel welcome and encourage them to listen to their own body and work within their own range of movement and pace. To support the class and help towards improving mobility, flexibility and strength, equipment will be available including: resistance bands, Pilates balls, batons and massage balls.

This course is primarily aimed at the older learner including those with dementia and is designed to be accessible for anyone who wishes to maintain or improve upon their fitness level. As there is only one tutor per class, it is advisable for those with support needs to attend with their nominated carer.
You should feel the benefit of an improved level of health and well-being which will include physical aspects such as strength, flexibility and relaxation but also social aspects gained from attending an exercise class with others and engaging in a common activity. An additional benefit of the class will be the social interaction and support for those attending in the role of carer. This course provides skills for self emprovement for those with dementia or supporting those with it.

There is a café on site which offers affordable food and drinks which will give you the opportunity to socialise before or after the class if you wish. There is limited parking onsite but there are a few disabled bays. There is usually plenty of on-street parking in the area.
Before starting any exercise programme, it’s advisable to seek advice from your GP or a health professional if you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury. As we are not qualified healthcare professionals, by participating in one of our online courses you agree to take full responsibility for your own health, wellbeing and safety.
If you have any health problems or difficulties that you suffer from which you feel may impact on your ability to participate in this class please email york.learning@york.gov.uk with the class you will be attending (title/code/tutor) and we will forward this onto the relevant tutor who will, if they feel it appropriate, contact you before your first class to discuss this with you.
