Millinery – Design and Make a Hat
This 6 week course will give students the opportunity to continue to learn the art of millinery using a millinery fabric of their choice. This course is perfect for those who have already completed a millinery course or have prior knowledge of hat and fascinator making. However, the tutor is happy to take beginners too.

During the course, you will work on your own project at your own speed, and the tutor will provide access to an extensive range of hat blocks, sewing machines, mannequin heads and flower making tools to enable you to complete your project.

The course tutor will also be available to advise and help with a variety of millinery techniques, including hat blocking, trimming, flower making, fabric manipulation and bespoke linings.

Beginners will be making a small felt (cocktail) hat, as this is the simplest material with which to learn to block a hat, whilst those learners who have already completed evening courses in felt/buckram/sinamay hat making, will be able to choose how to develop a design using materials of their choice.

The course is most suited to anyone that has attended a York Learning millinery course or has prior knowledge of hat and or fascinator making.

Beginners are welcome to join the course too, although we would recommend course AT1/JT2 - An Introduction to Millinery - Small Felt Cocktail Hat, for any beginners new to millinery.

However, if you would like to do this course and you have never done millinery before, the tutor will bring a range of materials to the first session for you to see what you could potentially make with regards to materials and hat types. You could try a number of those materials (at a cost of £3.50 for the samples, payable to the tutor at the first class), and following this, at home, select and buy the fabric of your choice to be blocked at the following session. All students will be expected to buy their own millinery fabric and trimmings.

Please bring along a notebook, pen/pencil and basic sewing kit (including fabric scissors/tape measure/pins, etc.).

Please also bring an apron for weeks 1 and 2. It is advisable to wear a long-sleeved top during these weeks for the blocking process.

Additional costs:

Students will be expected to buy their own millinery fabric and trimmings of their choice. A full list of millinery suppliers will be given so that you can buy additional items such as millinery feathers and mounts to trim your hat, if you so wish.
