Millinery - Hand Blocked Winter Felt Hat (Cocktail/Cloche/Fedora)
This five-week course will give learners an insight into the fascinating world of millinery.

Learners will be taught the skills to produce a hand blocked winter felt hat. The provided hat blocks will offer students the opportunity to make one of the following styles of hat: Cloche, Fedora, Trilby, Pillbox, small cocktail hat.

The course will teach students a variety of millinery techniques including hat blocking, trimming and how to make bespoke linings. By the end of the course, students will leave with a hat suitable for any autumnal/winter days out, including countryside events and winter weddings.

In addition to learning how to block a hat using traditional methods, learners will also receive an insight into the different styles and types of trimmings, including felt shapes, feathers and ribbon.

Your tutor will always be on hand to teach by a variety of methods including tutor presentation, varied demonstrations and one-to-one personalised guidance.

The course is suited to anyone with basic sewing skills.

This course will provide skills for self-improvement, which could lead to further study and/or self-employment as a milliner.

Please bring along a notebook, pen/pencil and basic sewing kit (including fabric scissors/tape measure/pins, etc.).

Please also bring an apron for weeks 1 and 2. It is advisable to wear a long-sleeved top during these weeks for the blocking process.

Additional costs:

Learners will be expected to buy their own small piece of satin fabric for making a bespoke lining. This will be needed in the final weeks of the course.

Millinery felt will be provided at the first class. Please note that only a small range of colours is available and the cost of this felt will be £15.00 per learner. You will need to pay this directly to the tutor at the first session and if possible, please bring the correct money.

A full list of millinery suppliers will be given to you by the tutor in case you wish to buy additional items to trim your hat, such as millinery feathers and mounts.
