Paint along with Bridget - Simple Watercolours
This is a fun and structured watercolour course covering a range of painting exercises to help you grow in confidence.

You will be guided through how to mix colours, how to layer colours and how to get different effects with your paints. You will be sent a range of reference images that we will work from, and your tutor will give live demonstrations during the class that you can paint along with at home.

The course is structured in a paint along style.

The course is suitable for all abilities from beginners to the more experienced. It would be preferable to have some experience in drawing and painting, but it is a mixed ability course that allows everyone to progress regardless of ability.

This course provides skills for self-improvement, which could lead to further study/or a pathways towards self-employment as a working artist.

You will need to bring and have prepared for class:

- Your own set of watercolours (in a range of colours, e.g. ultramarine blue or colbalt blue; alizarin crimson; burnt umber; cadmium or mid-tone yellow; sap green; and any others that you may have).
- A palette.
- Round watercolour brushes. You can use a selection of brush sizes - for example a size 0, 4 and 6. It is useful to have a larger brush (a 1 inch or bigger) for creating washes.
- You can use any size of watercolour paper – but no less than size A4 please. To help you with washes, use no less than 200lb (not to be confused with g/m) cold pressed paper (Bridget uses Arches Watercolour 300lb Block 9in x 12in, from Amazon, Jacksons online or Great Art websites).
- Please have a ‘spare’ sheet of paper or sketchbook for testing colours and making notes.
- Two water pots: one large to wash brushes out and another for clean water to use in washes.
- Masking tape.
- A board to tape your paper.
- A rag to wipe your brush on.
- Cling film.
- Salt.
- Masking fluid.
- A dipping pen (used for calligraphy and usually comes with an assortment of nibs).

You will need to have your image drawn out before each class. You will be notified when you receive your images as to what to draw out for the first class. When drawing out, draw faintly enough so that you can just see it. It is probably best to use an HB pencil.

No session on 1 November 2023(half-term holidays).

You will be sent the reference photo via email and it is up to you to have it ready to use for each session. You will need to have the image drawn out before the class.

This is a paint along class so it is essential that you are prepared and ready to paint before the session begins. Please have your work station ready … your paints squeezed out on your palette, water in your tub, everything to hand.

This is an online course that will be delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using.

You will receive your Zoom login details 24 hours before the course is due to start. If you enrol late, you will receive the Zoom code on the day that your course starts. (If you haven't received your Zoom code by the day of your course, please check your junk email inbox.) The Zoom login code will remain the same throughout the course.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.
