British Sign Language (BSL) Beginners Plus
IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE: This course was due to start on the 14th January 2023 however, the start date was put back.
The course will now start on the 11th March 2023 & finish on the 10th June 2023 (with no classes on the 8th & 29th April and the 6th 27th May).

This British Sign Language course is aimed at those who have some previous knowledge of BSL, but who still regard themselves as “Beginners”.

It is the ideal extension course to the British Sign Language Beginners course, which ran in the autumn of 2022 at York High School. However, learners who have not attended this course are welcome if they already have some basic knowledge of BSL.

The aim of this "beginners plus" course is to move the learners from a simple “knowledge of signs” (vocabulary) level of understanding onto a more thorough understanding of how the signs may be used effectively in a conversation.

The course will also cover colours, numbers, time/money, family, timelines, weather, transport, feelings/emotions and directions amongst other things, while improving grammar and fluency.
Topics will often be woven together and re-capped in order to help us to retain information.

This is a lively, engaging course. We will watch videos, look at picture sequence stories and use flash cards to help our receptive skills. We will also use activities and games to check our understanding and make the most of the opportunities presenting themselves in class.

At various points throughout the term, the tutor will suggest that the class is filmed whilst practising BSL conversation. This is entirely optional, and no learners will be expected to take part if they are not happy to do so. It is a learning opportunity, but certainly not compulsory.
