Greek - Beginners - an Introduction
This course is an introduction to the Greek language. We will learn:

• the Greek alphabet (characters and sounds)
• greetings
• colours
• days, months and seasons
• numbers
• how to tell the time
• how to give information about ourselves (name, age, nationality, job, family)
• how to express likes/dislikes
• how to talk about our hobbies
• some basic Greek grammar (Present tense in verb; the three genders – masculine, feminine, neuter – in nouns and adjectives; personal and possessive pronouns; and the three cases – nominative, genitive and accusative)

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• read and understand short, simple Greek texts
• use Greek to talk and ask about basic things
• obtain an initial understanding of the Greek way of speaking (intonation) as well as the culture and lifestyle of Greek people

This course is suitable if you have no (or very little) knowledge of Greek and you want to learn Greek for fun, to use with friends/family from Greece/Cyprus or to use it on holidays.

We will be using the following coursebook: Communicate in Greek for Beginners (Book & CD) by Kleanthis Arvanitakis, Publisher: Deltos Publishing; 1st edition (31 July 2010), ISBN-13: 978-9607914385.

You are encouraged to buy the book after our first lesson to help support your learning. The same coursebook will be used for Greek Levels 2 and 3 (approximate cost £30.00 – you can check the baylanguagebooks.co.uk website for the best prices).

There is no class on Thursday 27 October 2022 (half-term holidays).

This is an online course that will be delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using. You will receive details and joining instructions of how to access the course shortly before the start date by email.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.
