Ways into Abstraction
Abstract art is about representing the experiential world using shapes, colour and gestural marks. This hands-on online course will dive into the world of abstraction and take the learner on a journey into the practice of transforming what we see and feel into art.

Following the example of modern and contemporary abstract artists, we will start off with observational drawing, abstracting from visual stimuli, and progressively move on towards more intuitive and expressive ways of making art, including more experimental techniques. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own visual language through experimentations with drawing and painting using a range of wet and dry media, as well as mixed media techniques.

By the end of the course, learners will have developed an understanding of colour, gesture, scale, form and mark-making, and will have created a number of small works that explore the possibilities of abstract art in their own style.

Topics covered will include:
- Looking and abstracting
- Mark-making and gesture
- Colour theory
- Composition, layering and texture
- Masking and flat edge minimalism
- Using squeegees and pieces of card instead of brushes
- Paint manipulation and an introduction to acrylic mediums
- Incorporating dry media (graphite and crayons) into paintings
- Intuition and chance encounters
