Diving into colour: Abstract art workshop - Adult Learning in York Week
Abstract art is about expressing the experiential world using shapes, colour and gestural marks.

This hands-on workshop in abstract painting will dive headfirst into the practice of self-expression and letting go. The workshop will cover acrylic painting techniques, expressive mark-making, and will give insights into creative ways of building textures and layers of colour. We will be using unconventional tools such as squeegees to paint with alongside brushes, and will start by working on paper before moving on to create a finished abstract painting on canvas by the end of the session.
By looking at examples of work by contemporary and modern abstract artists, and with guidance and practical demonstrations from the tutor, this session is a way of exploring your unique visual language.

Materials you need to bring:

• A pad of A2 paper
• Selection of Acrylic Paints:
Primary colours, plus a selection of colours you like the look of.
• Pre-Stretched Canvas (whatever size you feel comfortable with, (and can carry!) but big enough to get gestural. Somewhere between 50 x 50 – 80 x 80 cm seems realistic – it can also be rectangular)
• Water pots/Mixing tray
• Selection of brushes
• A squeegee of sorts (This can simply be an old credit card, or something similar. A small piece of flat plastic or a silicone scraper tool. It should be a bit flexible, but not floppy and not rigid.
• Any other tool that you think might be interesting to paint with (not essential)

This course takes place in the Garden Room at the central library in York. It is a ground floor classroom. Please note that the library has no parking available. There are sometimes a couple of available parking slots for people with a blue badge directly outside the library but these are City of York Council owned, and not library owned, and cannot be relied on to be available. There are bike racks and a number of buses that stop nearby.

There will be a short, informal break about half way through for you to get something to eat or drink from the library café if you wish.
