Further Journeys into Abstract Painting
Abstract art is about representing the experiential world using shapes, colour and gestural marks. This hands-on course is a continuation of “Ways into Abstraction” (although new people are always welcome!), and will dive deeper into the world of abstract art by taking the learner on journeys into the practice of transforming what we see and feel into art.

In this course, we will work on refining techniques, and go deeper into discovering our unique style and modes of expression. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own projects throughout the course, with individual critiques and group discussions. We will be thinking about how we can tell a story through a painting. The final aim to produce a fully-fledged abstract artwork, in any size or shape (within reason!) that you will be proud to hang on the wall.

During the course, we will look at the work of contemporary abstract artists and how they do what they do. We will explore experimental techniques such as painting with sound and music, responding to our sensory environments through painting, and tuning in to intuition. We will take a deeper look at ways of applying paint, mixed-media approaches, mediums made from household items, mark-making, layering, masking and working with textures. There will be an opportunity to work on different surfaces, as well as using collage to incorporate external elements into the work.

Whilst this course is a continuation of a previous one, you do not need to have done the previous course in order to jump into this one. Ideally you will have had at least a basic experience of doing some painting and drawing before, or if you are interested in trying something new for the first time that is totally fine too!
