Making a Splash - How to paint the perfect Seascape
Over six weeks we will look at creating an atmospheric seascape using techniques that we will learn from a range of artists, both modern and traditional.

Starting with observation, we will look at form, light, shadow, line and composition. Using either pencil or charcoal we will sketch out our studies, discovering along the way how to recreate our feeling of the seaside on paper. In the sketching process, we will decide what focal points we enjoy and how to incorporate those into our pieces.

Using a range of research photographs we will study the crash of a wave, the haze of mist and the reflection of light in the sky and on water. We will learn how to paint a realistic seascape with all its elements.

Using the tutor's own research photographs (or your own if you prefer) we will gain the confidence to create a painting from start to finish. We will create a small seascape that you will feel proud to hang in your home.

You’ll need to provide your own art materials and bring them to class. You will be able to get these materials from WH Smith, The Range, Hobbycraft or online art suppliers.

For the first week you will need A4 paper (a good choice would be WH Smith A4 mixed media art pad, 30 sheets, as it's a good heavy weight smooth paper), a 2b and 8b pencil, a pencil sharpener, a rubber, a putty rubber and charcoal. I'll have a few extras for you to try too.

For the following weeks you will use acrylic paint materials, so please bring along on the third week:

- Acrylic tubes of a student quality paint by Winsor and Newton or Daler Rowney in: Titanium white, burnt sienna, raw umber, ultramarine, cobalt blue, alizarin crimson and lemon yellow.

- A selection of brushes, any that you fancy but our suggestion would be a Daler Rowney Graduate synthetic brush 1"or 2" and a synthetic sword brush size 1/2" - great for wide areas and creating lines. I will also bring in a range of tools for you to play with in week two, so you can try before you buy.

- A canvas paper pad by Winsor and Newton or Canvas Board, around A4 size.

- A palette (you could use anything flat [I use an empty Fererro Rocher chocolate box to keep everything wet if I haven't finished]) a plastic cup, and paper towels to wipe brushes.

Please bring your own hand sanitiser and sanitiser wipes to each session. York Explore venues also require that learners wear face coverings in communal areas and classrooms.
