Family History - Your Journey of Discovery
A course for those who want to start researching their family history or look further into their family background.
Who? Where? What? How? These are the questions that we will start to answer in this four week course with a focus on discovery, enjoyment and making your family story come alive.

We will look at a variety of ways to begin tracking down your family history, and at easy ways of recording your finds. Sources will include birth, marriage and death certificates, the 1911 Census, (where you can see the handwriting of some of your ancestors. How will it compare with yours?!) online family research websites, CD-ROMs, and old newspapers. We will also look at some ways of getting past the ‘Roadblocks’ and at the pros and cons of DNA testing for family history research.

You will find some connections that are a complete surprise to you, and some parts of your story that will make you look at yourself and your family in a new light. Perhaps someone in your family loves gardening – you may find that one of your ancestors was a gardener. There is so much to discover!

There will be lots of “Hands on”, so come prepared to discover your own story, warts and all!

At the end of your course you will have learnt some of the techniques needed to do further Family History research and have some stories about your ancestors to pass down your own family!
