Furniture Design and Restoration
Develop the skills required to make furniture from new timber or recycled timber, or learn how to renovate a piece of furniture.

The course is designed around you. The tutor will assess the needs of each student and plan accordingly, covering topics such as making frameworks, strengthening, and choosing and applying finishes, stains and polishes. We will also look at stripping, cleaning, repairing and making missing parts, to return furniture to its former glory.

Please bring a project to work on such as an old piece of furniture or materials to make a new piece from scratch. This can be discussed at the first class if you wish. You may also require paint/varnish stripper, wire wool, meths, rubber gloves, an apron, French/button polish, timber, cotton wool and lint-free cloths. Most of these items will be for restoring.

The school holds a small amount of items to get people started at the first session if you are unsure about what you need e.g. stripper and wire wool and abrasives (there is no timber available though).

Please bring your own hand sanitiser and sanitiser wipes to each session.

No class on 21st February 2022 (half-term holidays).

The classroom is located some distance from the car park and entrance, so please do not bring heavy items if you can’t carry them (although a trolley may be available to borrow if necessary, but please don’t rely on this being available every week).

To find your classroom, come to the York High School Community Reception door by Energise sports centre, and not the main school reception.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any creative product or tools that you intend to use during the course, before the first class.

If COVID-19 guidelines change at short notice and face-to-face delivery is no longer possible, a full refund will be given if the course has not started. A pro-rata refund will be issued after the first week, if the course has already begun.
