Let's Investigate... Criminology
Oh so many questions….Nature or nurture? Personality or poverty? What actually is a psychopath? Does prison work?
This course aims to provide a fun and accessible introduction to some of the key ideas, theories and debates within the field of criminology. Over the six-week course we will look at three key areas…
• Nature or nurture? What are the causes of crime? Here we look at some of the theories, ideas and debates about why people offend, considering biology, psychology and the impact of society. We consider our own beliefs and the role of the media in shaping them.
• Psychopaths- what they are and what they are not. We will explore what the condition really is and how it is linked to crime. We will take a look at some high-profile examples and how they are portrayed in both film and the media.
• Tough on crime or tough on the causes of crime? Society’s views of the causes of crime, usually shape their response to it. In the final section we discuss punishment v’s rehabilitation. Do prisons work and what are the alternatives? Are there any groups that should not even go to prison? Here we will look at some of the key ideas and introduce some lively debates!
The tutor is a Dr of criminology and has taught the subject for 15 years. Before this she was a prison healthcare governor and has worked with many high-profile offenders, so has lots of stories to tell as well as introducing some of the key debates and ideas.
