Dressmaking - Sewing Chat & Problem Solving with my Peers
An hour of sewing/pattern cutting chat, queries and problem solving with your ‘own project’. The 'demo of the week' will be available to view within the session and a group discussion will follow with questions/queries. The subject of the demos will be sewing and pattern cutting-related and include collars, cuffs, waistbands, sewing with stretch and lots more too… (the tutor will also take group requests for demos if the subject is beneficial for all learners).

Breakout rooms will be used for small group discussions as well as 1:1 individual help on projects.

Example of the Structure of session (the order may change on a weekly basis depending on the topic):

9.30am - Introduction and general chat
9.35am – All learners will have microphones muted with cameras turned off and asked to follow the link to watch the ‘demo of the week’ or talk through the step-by-step of a technique using a PowerPoint presentation.
9.45am approx. – Learners return to Zoom for a discussion about the video where questions/queries are answered – learners will have microphones muted, and questions asked via the ‘hand up’ system. We will also be using the ‘chat’ function in Zoom.
10am – Learners split into small group ‘Breakout rooms’ to continue working on their own projects. The tutor will move around the breakout rooms helping as necessary with questions/queries.
10.25am – Breakout rooms closed and all return to join others to evaluate session
10.30am – Class finish

Learners will be encouraged to make up samples of the demonstrated technique in their own time, using the video as a prompt and a step-by-step guide to help.

Please note that demos are recorded in tutors’ own homes. All videos/step-by-step instructions will be available to the learners following the session and useful as a resource in future projects.

No class on 26th October 2021 (half-term holidays).

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where weekly demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas between sessions and keep a record of your progress.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.

This is an online course that will be delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using.

You will receive the Zoom code and password by email 24 hours before your course is due to start. If you enrol late, your Zoom code will be sent on the day that your course starts. The Zoom code login and password you receive will be the same for every class this term.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.
