Sew Simple - (Hand Sewing) -Bags/Cushions/Textiles
There are so many beautiful fabrics available… This is a new course, suitable for
beginners and those returning to sewing after a break, where you will learn some basic sewing skills from laying out pattern pieces and cutting fabric, inserting zips, making pockets through to finishing your project to a professional standard. At the end of this 10-week course, you will have made a simple bag/cushion/other textile and be the envy of your friends!

Sessions will include a comprehensive step-by-step PowerPoint presentation for you to work along with at home, and tutor support every step of the way. All videos/step-by-steps will be available for you to use in future projects too.

Structure of session:
11am - Introduction and general chat
11.05am - All learners will be asked to mute microphones and advised to turn off cameras and asked to follow the link to watch the ‘demo of the week’ which will be displayed in the ‘chat’ function of zoom.
11.15am - Learners return to Zoom for a discussion about the video where questions/queries are answered – learners will have microphones muted and questions asked via the ‘hand up’ system. We will also be using the ‘chat’ function in Zoom.
11.20am - Interactive learner ‘copy and repeat’ of the demo, with aid of PowerPoint
presentation step-by-step guide and tutor guidance throughout. Learners will be expected to complete any tasks in their own time, ready for the next session.
12pm – 5-minute break
12.55pm - Evaluate session and discuss requirements for the following week.

Please note that demonstrations are recorded in tutors’ own homes. All videos and
PowerPoints will be available to the learners following the session and for you to use as a resource in future projects.

This course is suitable for beginners and those learners wishing to start sewing again after a break.

*Please note* This is a Hand Sewing Course – the tutor will clearly identify any parts that could be sewn on a Sewing Machine – but during class time, all instructions will be given for hand sewing.

You will need to provide your own fabrics and haberdashery to complete the tasks – detailed information of the requirements and pattern pieces will be sent once we know the class has enough learners enrolled to make it viable. Prosp User 5
No class on 26th October 2021 (half-term holidays).

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where weekly demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas between sessions and keep a record of your progress.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.

This is an online course that will be delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using.

You will receive the Zoom code and password by email 24 hours before your course is due to start. If you enrol late, your Zoom code will be sent on the day that your course starts. The Zoom code login and password you receive will be the same for every class this term.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.
