Dressmaking
Do commercial patterns never fit? Would you like to learn how to draft your own patterns and alter commercial patterns to suit your shape, using your own measurements? This course will focus on all the processes necessary to create garments: from taking your own measurements, drafting/altering a pattern and where to buy fabrics to cutting out and fitting the garment. We will also look at perfecting zip fastenings, collars, pockets, sleeves and waistbands etc. and finally pressing for the professional finish.

Your tutor will always be on hand to teach by a variety of methods including tutor presentation, varied demonstrations and one-to-one personalised guidance.

During the 10-week course learners will develop their dressmaking/pattern cutting skills and complete more complicated projects to a professional standard. Some independent study outside class will be required to complete projects.

Subject to numbers, classes will continue after Christmas to further extend learning/production.

Verbal and written feedback will be given by the tutor throughout the course, and learners will be required to produce course work which will include ideas books/samples and a simple garment.

This is a mixed ability class, but an interest in sewing/pattern cutting is essential. Some previous basic pattern cutting/dressmaking experience would be beneficial. Prosp User 4
At the first class, learners do not need to bring anything except a ring binder, notebook and pen/pencil and basic sewing kit (including scissors/tape measure/pins etc.) If you have a project/fabric in mind, please bring this along too.

Learners will be expected to buy their own fabric for making toiles and final garments.

Please bring your own hand sanitiser and sanitiser wipes to each session.

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where weekly demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas between sessions and keep a record of your progress.

When you arrive at the school, please walk to the school's purple block entrance and someone from the York Learning team will be there to direct you to your classroom.

Please ensure that you read and understand the health and safety guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.
