Pattern Cutting & Garment Construction - Skill Builder
An exciting opportunity to learn or re-familiarise yourself with a series of pattern cutting and sewing techniques that could be relevant to present projects, or inspire future sewing projects. The pattern cutting adaptations can be created from ‘existing’ commercial patterns or patterns you have drafted yourself. Sessions will include a video detailing the instructions on the specified technique, followed by a comprehensive step-by-step PowerPoint presentation for you to work along with at home with tutor support every step of the way.
Each week you will also be encouraged to work on your own projects and there will be opportunities to ask for advice and assistance from the tutor and peers, (the tutor will also take group requests for demo’s if the subject is beneficial for all learners).

This is not a beginner’s class; some sewing/pattern cutting experience will be necessary.
Structure of session:
1pm - Introduction and general chat.
1.10pm – Learners are asked to mute microphones & turn cameras off (if they wish) and follow the link posted in ‘chat’ to watch the ‘demo of the week’.
1.25pm approx. – Learners return to Zoom for a discussion about the video where questions/queries are answered – learners will have microphones muted, and questions asked via the ‘hand up’ system. We will also be using the ‘chat’ function in Zoom.
1.30pm – Interactive learner ‘copy and repeat’ of the demo, with aid of PowerPoint ppresentation step-by-step guide and tutor guidance throughout. Learners will be expected to complete any tasks in their own time, ready for the next session.
2.15pm – 5 minute break.
2.20pm – Learners split into small group ‘Breakout rooms’ to work on their own projects. The tutor will move around the breakout rooms helping as necessary with questions/queries. At this stage short 1:1 consultations can also take place if learners prefer to discuss their queries in a more private environment.
3pm – Evaluate session

Please note that demonstrations are recorded in tutors’ own homes. All videos and PowerPoints will be available to the learners following the session and available to use as a resource in their future projects

You will need to provide your own fabrics and pattern paper to complete the tasks – detailed information of the requirements and pattern pieces will be sent once we know the class has enough learners enrolled to make it viable.

No session on 15th February 2021

*Please note, a fully working sewing machine is required to complete this course – no time will be available from the tutor to fix sewing machine problems.*

The course will be fully supported by ‘Padlet’ (best described as an online noticeboard) where weekly demonstrations and other useful material will be uploaded by the tutor. This platform can also be used to keep in touch with likeminded learners to share ideas between sessions and keep a record of your progress.

This is an online course that will be delivered via Zoom, so please ensure that you can access this on the device you are using. You will receive details and joining instructions on how to access the course shortly before the start date by email.

You will need to join Zoom five minutes before your session is due to start and remain in the “waiting room”. Your tutor will then admit you to the class once your session is ready to begin.

If you require help to download or use Zoom, please email ictskills@york.gov.uk at least a week before your course starts and we will endeavour to provide assistance.

Please ensure that you read and understand the H&S guidelines on any new creative product you intend to use during the course, before the first class.
