Bookbinding - Japanese stab Binding
Over the course of an afternoon, we invite you to join us to explore a bookbinding technique called Japanese Stab Binding. Using an awl, needle and thread, we will be binding together pages using a decorative “Shell” stitch. The outcome of the course will be an A4 portrait Art Journal.

The foundational Japanese version of Stab Binding is called Yotsume Toji, which roughly translates to “four holes”. This is the basic Chinese version, while the Korean standard has five holes, a favourable number in Korean Culture. All styles were practiced during the Edo period in Japan and the Qing Dynasty in China.

This course aims to inspire you and guide you through the basics of the technique which you can continue to develop and adapt by introducing different papers, mixed media elements, decorative stitches and through experimentation with scale.

This course is delivered online using Zoom. The three hour session will consist of live tutor demonstrations and the sharing of visual resources and handouts to aid understanding. Guidance, support and feedback will be given throughout the duration of the course and small class sizes will ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.

It is important that you also read the sections: 'What do I need to bring / additional costs?' and 'Is there anything else I need to know?'.

Suitable for everyone, both for beginners or those who are looking to develop their skills. The craft of bookbinding requires a moderate level of dexterity in your hands because of the process of threading the pages together and the pressure necessary in the use of the awl. Prosp User 4
