Pattern Cutting & Detailed Garment Construction (Optional York Learning Certificate - Fit/Finish)
This course will focus on building a portfolio/sketch book of invaluable information and techniques within dressmaking and pattern cutting. We will look at innovative pattern cutting processes and suitable fabrics to create professionally finished garments.
This term the demonstrations will focus on tops - including collars and cuffs, although you are welcome to work on any other garments in class and help/advice will be on hand. A variety of techniques will be explored including fitting your own patterns and commercial patterns, along with techniques to finish garments to a professional standard along with lots more to enhance your pattern cutting and dressmaking projects.
The focus of the class will be to create well fitted garments and learners are encouraged to develop their own patterns through pattern cutting techniques or use commercially bought patterns that can be altered to your own style. During class learners will create a variety of samples to build their portfolio and will also be encouraged to work on a garment to practice their new found skills. Following the 10 week course (and subject to numbers) the course will continue for a further term. Learners can receive a York Learning Certificate – Fit & Finish (Tops - including collars and cuffs) upon completion of the course.
There is no obligation to submit a portfolio for certification, simply come along work at your own pace and collect some useful skills/techniques along the way. NB if you do intend to submit a portfolio, some work at home on your portfolio will be required (approx. 1 hour per week) Verbal and written feedback will be given by the tutor throughout the course.
Additional Benefits of the course: We regularly visit fabric shops/suppliers and hold a charity Dressmaking Showcase to display the wonderful work of the learners.
