Introduction to Oils
We will start with the basics of what oil paints are, the best equipment and materials needed for using them and how to lay out your work area so you can work cleanly and effectively. You will also learn about supports – what you can (and cannot) paint on. From there, we will begin experimenting with mixing colours and explore the way oil paint differs from water-based media. We’ll explore mark-making, paint consistency, colours and layering. Throughout the day you will be encouraged to experiment and explore the possibilities of working in oils. We’ll also talk about themes and approaches to oil painting. Throughout the day you will have lots of one-to-one guidance and support from a highly experienced tutor.
By the end of the day you will have a basic understanding of how paint with oils. You will know which equipment and materials to buy, how to layout your work area, how to care for and store your equipment and how to start a painting. Your new knowledge will allow you to progress and experiment with confidence. During the day you will produce a series of small studies and reference notes that you can take home.
